"Empowering Communities, Transforming Chicago, One Community at a Time."

The SEEDS Initiative

Safety is Everyone's Responsibility

SEEDS Initiative

Foundational Elements

Self Belief, Intellectual Growth, Spiritual Awareness, Guided Individuality

Target Audience

Chicago's inner-city young adults

Program Focus

Empower authentic self-expression and community contribution

I am honored to introduce the SEEDS (Self Empowerment and Economic Developmental System) initiative, integrated into the UPA community E-bike security program for Englewood. Aligned with Violence Interrupters' values, this initiative fosters holistic growth—educational, physical, emotional, and spiritual development—to break the cycle of hopelessness.

Our vision is to empower individuals to become successful, influential community members who leave a lasting legacy. Central to SEEDS are four foundational elements, beginning with Self Belief, which nurtures intellectual growth and spiritual awareness, helping participants recognize their potential and harness passions for meaningful goals.

Targeting Chicago's inner-city young adults, this program champions "guided individuality," providing a supportive framework to empower authentic self-expression and positive community contribution.

Quick Response

Officers respond rapidly to concerns while remaining approachable to all residents.

Better Access

Bicycles can reach areas vehicles cannot, improving coverage in all parts of our neighborhood.

High Visibility

Officers maintain high visibility without creating barriers between security and community.

Understanding Englewood's Security Challenges
Historical Context
Decades of systemic disinvestment have contributed to Englewood's safety challenges. A complex relationship between our community and traditional security stems from a history of over-policing combined with under-protection.
Geographic Vulnerabilities
Englewood's physical layout creates unique security challenges with vacant properties, transit stations, and areas difficult for traditional police vehicles to monitor effectively.
Community Impact
Safety concerns affect daily life, with residents limiting activities, adapting schedules, and avoiding public spaces. This triggers a cycle of economic decline for local businesses.

Conflict Resolution

Violence Interrupters Initiative

Multiple ways to connect with UPA Security officers for assistance, information, or community building. Our officers are here to serve and support the Englewood community.

To effectively address and reduce community violence, Violence Interrupters undergo comprehensive, specialized training designed to equip them with the skills necessary to mediate conflict and promote safety. The training program includes the following key components:

1

Conflict De-escalation

Violence Interrupters are trained to identify early warning signs of potential conflict and intervene before situations escalate. Techniques emphasize calming tensions and encouraging dialogue over confrontation.

2

Advanced Communication Skills

Trainees develop strong interpersonal communication skills, including active listening, empathy, and non-confrontational dialogue. They are trained to articulate messages clearly while minimizing defensiveness and misunderstandings among parties in conflict.

3

Crisis Intervention

Participants are taught to recognize and respond effectively to high-stress or emotionally charged situations. This includes identifying signs of emotional or psychological distress and applying appropriate, immediate support strategies to ensure safety for all involved.

4

Cultural Competency

Recognizing the diversity of the communities they serve, Violence Interrupters receive training in cultural awareness and sensitivity. This fosters an understanding of how cultural backgrounds and norms influence conflict and enables respectful, informed engagement.

5

Peer Mediation Techniques

Trainees learn structured mediation methods that help individuals in conflict reach mutual understanding and resolution. The training emphasizes neutrality, trust-building, and ensuring all voices are heard and respected during the process.

6

Knowledge of Support Services

Violence Interrupters are familiarized with a wide range of local resources, including mental health services, housing support, addiction recovery programs, and emergency contacts. This enables them to make timely and appropriate referrals for individuals in crisis.

7

Community Engagement and Relationship-Building

Ongoing engagement with community members is a core focus. Violence Interrupters work to establish trust, encourage collective responsibility, and promote nonviolence through outreach, education, and collaborative problem-solving.

This thorough training helps Violence Interrupters handle conflicts well,
